Old Songs

I wrote a song
Many years ago, now
When I was thinking of him

Now, I sing that old song
And wonder if he sings the one
That he wrote about me

I Adore You

Have I mentioned today
That I adore you
I mean that genuinely
To the person I see
But I only know
The half of you
That protects me
From the half I don't.

You look weak
To the casual observer
Who missed the bit
When you chased
The demands away
They'll be back,
I know
Because you all share a home

Please don't go
No I can't make you stay
I haven't got any strength
Your insane
I like the rain,
When I'm under a roof
And your falling again
Climb back,
I promise to wait

I make and analogy
For every episode
Goats, paper boats,
Falling trees in my dreams
Alone, I got time to kill...
That was a pore choice of word
Alright, sleep tight
Call me when you
Come back to life

Pills are a joke
An ignorant coat
Sayin 'how is your day'
Really, your soul
Bled out fully by noon
Be polite
Take the prescription
Never fill it
When your fully addicted
They'll just lock you away
At the end of the day
They'd rather have you for a headcount
in the penal system
Than a member of the voting population.

A stitch of time
That's all it is
Then we'll be back to
Netflix on the couch
Make dinner, be sinners
All the usual stuff
Dreaming out future plans
Like we have it all to ourselves

Have I mentioned today
That I adore you.

Paradise

Loving him is like living
In a hurricane prone area

Once in a while you gotta
Bring in the lawn furnature
And board up the windows

But all the rest of the time
It's paradise.

Fish Tank

It's like standing outside a fish tank
When my fish has got the flu
I want to tell him it will pass
I want to say I'll wait right here
But my yells will be too muffled
If I tap the glass, he'll hide
So I stand outside the fish tank,
And send my love inside.

Silence

Silence is the
Only force great enough
To hold
How much I love you

Caterpillar Gone

I can stop loving you
As a butterfly can return
To a caterpillar

In the first place, I don't want to
And in the second,

I've misplaced the cocoon.

Bruised

My feet have been bruised
For the last time
Kicking in doors
That were never mine

I am done walking highways
After midnight
And keeping track of tides
Other than my own

I proclaim freedom
From the current
If it flows the other way
Let another woman fight it

I am strong
I am worn
I am wise
I am done

Portrait

There is a portrait
On a wall
It's crooked
The portrait, not the wall

And all along I
Thought the world
Was flying, really
I've been falling

There is no wonderland
For there is no wander left
Once you've found that
Person in the portrait

It is crooked
The portrait, not the wall.

Bed Monster

There seems to be a monster
He lives beneath the bed
I'm told he is an aweful guy
And not just in my head

We haven't seen him in a while
I'd forgotten he was there
Until the night we let the light
Get dimmer than we dare

Beneath the bed, that is his home
Like a garden to a knomb
He isn't going to eat the shoes
He isn't going to watch the news

So what's his name, what's his game
And what's he want from me?
Nothing, not a single thing,
But keep us from feeling free.

Make A Choice

Because there is only so much unclaimed real estate within a person.
Like a VHS tape, will run out of space and need recorded over.
And sometimes the price for loving one is giving up loving another.
I commit to you, my breakfast mango, and will forgo the toast, today.

If only lunch could be so simple.

Smile

The only photos
I like of myself
Are the ones I
Distinctly remember
I was thinking of you
At the time.

Just Like A Goat

I would dance with your demons
To sit a wile with your soul
When the storm has passed
Like a goat leaves the shed
Where she hid from the rain
Just to follow the gray sky
Wondering why it had wandered away.

You & Me & Pizza In The Doorway

Flies start biting 'for the rain
Can't wash the sweat away
Dragons are fit for fighting
And the Wolf is here to stay
In a quiet voice you ask me
What's for dinner? and I say:
It's just a you, and me, and pizza
In the doorway kinda day

Carry on
You're plenty strong for one, my son
Carry on
It's not a race that can be won
Just a day that's nearly done
Carry on

I won't hide you from the winter
When you're ready for the snow
Know the wolf, it isn't friendly
You'll have dragons of your own
As I love you I will promise:
This will pass, and always know
It's just a you, and me, and pizza
In the doorway kinda of day

Carry on
You're plenty strong for one, my son
Carry on
It's not a race that can be won
Just a day that's nearly done
Carry on

When the wolf has had its fill
And all my dragons fly away
I will love you from a distance
That no living man can say
And of all our many moments
I will surely miss the most
All the you, and me, and pizza
In the doorway kinda days

Carry on
You're plenty strong for one, my son
Carry on
It's not a race that can be won
Just a day that's nearly done
Carry on

In Happiness

Why can't we live in happiness
I know we've earned the right
We've paid our dues to live life through
Without the endless fight

Why can't we live in happiness
So simple like a dream
I'd hold you like a valley holds
The stream that makes it green

Why can't we live in happiness
Just for an hour or two
What I would give to see you smile
The way you used to do

When Dragons Win

I would fight a dragon
To make my mate
My mate again
Although I'd surely loose

On my weakest day
I'm plenty strong for one
But still can't win
A war for two

Do Not Anger Irony

I dream of a life that hurts you
So I stay awake and write instead
A poem for every coffee I'm not allowed to bring
A song for every evening we sit in seperate swings

Of all the ships that pass in the night why did ours collide?
Do not anger irony
It's love that keeps me wanting you
It's love that made me leave

Because

I hope your bike don't hit no rock.
Your sailboat always got a dock
I hope your car has the smoothest lane
And never gets caught up in rain
Because I love you
I pray all day, and twice at night
That you can, but don't have to fight
For dreams that seem too far away
I'd make this world tilt your way
Because I love you
I hope she treats you like a king
If she intents to wear your ring
I hope she gives you what I would
And life for you is just so good
Because I love you

Wanting Whiskey

A flood needs rain
Like a deer needs lead
Its the ugly dreams
That get you out of bed
A hundred boys
May catch my eye
I'll drink a hundred beers
But I'll still be dry
When I want whiskey
I want you.

Tin House Topia

Somewhere in a bottle
Is a place you'll never be
If your heart is made of copper
And your soul has got a key

Lost in your own envy
The smell of joy you learn
Till the sky begins to darken
And the weather takes a turn

It hides in Tin House Topia
The demon in the rain

Save the bottle,
Let it sink
Loose a lover
In a blink

Peaches, sweetest ever baited
Never waited, ever ripe
Have a moment of surrender
Be at last a bird of flight

Streets are paved with prize and lies
Must not wander out of sight
A stranger growing ever stronger
With the fading of the light

It hides in Tin House Topia
The demon in the rain

Save the bottle,
Let it sink
Loose a lover
In a blink

From a vessel to a boat
Made of paper, barely float
Hide the victim, hurt yourself
It robs the greatest kind of wealth

A patch will cut a deeper wound
A stitch will leave you on your own
Sit and listen to the rain
Cry, but that wont stop the pain.

Willow Trees

Benny was a lady from the inside in
All the town ninnys say he's livin' in sin
He run for the hills when they come with canes
And kept well hit till the summer rains

Fly friend fly, till you find your way
Higher then the place where the hatin' people play
Keep between the sea and the melting sun
For your wings of wax will surely run

Benny run aroud like a toad with a tail
Like a box-car done lost its rail
He found some place a time or two
Then run again when the sky turned blue

Fly friend fly, till you find your way
Higher then the place where the hatin' people play
Keep between the sea and the melting sun
For your wings of wax will surely run

Benny met a buddy at the world's end
It's a beer joint where the bad road bends
An' he kept a sittin' for a second round
The hatin' people come when your guard is down

Fly friend fly, till you find your way
Higher then the place where the hatin' people play
Keep between the sea and the melting sun
For your wings of wax will surely run

Benny got away, and he took to soar
He got up higher than he'd done before
Fell from the sky where the water's deep
The trees saw it all, now the willows still weep

Fly friend fly, till you find your way
Higher then the place where the hatin' people play
Keep between the sea and the melting sun
For your wings of wax will surely run
